The Jimma region is reputed to be a birthplace of Arabica coffee. This coffee is called a Limmu because it is a fully-washed coffee from the Jimma region.
The Limmu Kossa district is famous for its coffee production and there are many plantations in the forest. The Chalchissa Farm is an organically-certified forest coffee plantation owned by Yidnekachew Dabessa Chalchissa.
The trees in the plantation are not only used as shade, as in most traditional farms, but also play their role in a productive agroforestry system offering numerous benefits:
- from an agronomic point of view, the trees help combat soil erosion and offer better resistance to heat because the rain flows into the groundwater;
- economically, intercropping is employed within the coffee forests to produce complementary resources such as honey, ginger and firewood;
- finally, agroforestry is a very good way of preserving biodiversity. Well-preserved areas have on average 10 to 15 different tree species per coffee forest, which helps preserve biodiversity.
It is most certainly the income from coffee production that makes this agroforestry model possible. Coffee production is a source of financial support for these forests, and a means of ensuring the preservation of the diverse ecosystem, which is rich in fauna and flora. Chalchissa not only boasts a generous variety of soils and tree species, but it also respects a demanding environmental ethic; work is carried out by hand, without any chemicals.
