In Colombia, as in many other countries, young people are leaving for big cities and fleeing the
countryside to study and work in other areas. This is a reality that Colombia's aging coffee
industry is currently facing.
In the Concordia region, an association is raising hopes for the future of Colombian coffee.
Young coffee growers, aged between 18 and 35, are managing numerous plantations with the
aim of processing the coffee together at a shared washing station. The association was created as
a source of knowledge and expertise for its members, who lack processing experience. One of its
main strengths is that training is provided by the older generations, happy to pass on their
know-how. They work together to learn how to more effectively manage production and the
different methods of washing and drying, exploring different themes to progress towards
The name of this recent association is Jovcoffee, created to provide serious solutions for
renewing coffee production in local plantations. The average age of a producer is 58. The aim is
to show that coffee production can be profitable and a respectable profession. By demonstrating
how they can contribute to the production of value in their country and around the world,
Jovcoffee wants to give young people hope in order to produce quality coffees.
The name given to their new coffee is Yuppie, a symbol of hope and happiness for Colombian
coffee. It was the name used to describe young professionals in the United States in the 1980s.
The Antioquia terroir produces round coffees, generally with more body.
Yuppie represents the necessity of working together towards a shared vision of sustainability,
respect for the environment and quality.
