The farm’s producer, Catalina, worked for many months to produce this coffee, questioning her techniques and searching to improve quality. When we first visited her farm, we did not feel her coffee met our quality requirements, or that it did justice to her terroir’s potential. With Marjorie’s technical help and by reviewing her production methods, Catalina has now achieved a high level of coffee excellence without neglecting the social and environmental priorities to which her farm is committed. This coffee is produced mainly from fully-washed Caturra.
La Gabriela is the farm where it all started. Catalina’s grandparents lived there all their lives. Her grandmother, Gabriela, was a strong wise woman, while her grandfather, Tulio, was known for his generous heart.
Gabriela gave birth to eleven children at this farm, which is probably why the place still holds such a strong place in the hearts of the entire Vasquez family. Gabriela and Tulio produced coffee at the farm throughout their lives, using the most traditional of methods. Gabriela had inherited the farm from her father.
This farm is located at an altitude of between 1,300 and 1,600 metres and covers 26 hectares. It produces mainly Caturra, Castillo and Colombia coffees. The farm also has its own little “Garden of Eden” where small lots of exotic varieties are grown for experimentation and which has produced some exquisite microlots. It is planted with Java, Pacamara, Red Bourbon, Geisha and Typica.
The family would like to cultivate a greater number of exotic varieties in order to learn even more about coffee and to develop their range of microlots.
The La Gabriela finca is managed by Fabian. He is creative, resourceful, eager to increase his knowledge of processes, and already produces some incredible honey-processed and natural coffees. Dora, his wife, supports him in this adventure – and is apparently an outstanding cook!
